After weeks of speculation regarding the apparent differences in EU/UK version compared to its US counterpart – specifically the multi-player portion of the game – Naughty Dog has finally confirmed our fears. The EU/UK version of this summer’s masterpiece The Last of Us, was censored.
In an email sent to a curious and persistent fan, Naughty Dog representative ‘EvangM’ confirms the rumors, but gives few details of how the game was altered:
Sorry for the delay in responding, but we’ve been super busy. And we do read all of your and other fans’ messages, but there’s a lot of them! Anyway here we go:
1. The gore and violence ratings are subject to local regulatory boards in various countries, so the game must be slightly changed in order to accommodate those choices.
2. To be honest, I’m not sure what version Australia is getting. If you import the North/South American version, it will not be censored, but EU/UK will be.
Reading around the forums, viewing the copious amounts of online videos on youtube, or importing the game from the US, the differences become clear quite quickly. Firstly, the amount of blood that sprays from a downed or executed player has been significantly reduced. Also, the ability to dismember opponents via ‘special executions’ has been removed entirely.
The email refers to not knowing which version Australia has received, but knowing what we do about Australia’s past restrictions, they’ll be lucky to get the EU ‘toned down’ version!
