So amongst the cheers and excitement that the Playstation 4 will be out in time for Christmas in the UK, 29th of November to be precise, you’ve probably missed a load of other announcements from our friends Sony. So here’s a quick round up of what’s been happening.
15 NEW GAMES
At Gamescom Sony announced 15 more titles that were headed to the PS4. Naughty Dog (probably Uncharted 4), Santa Monica (probably God of War) and Media Molecule (probably Little Big Planet 3) all had unconfirmed titles in the works.
Other titles included Everybody’s Gone to Rapture, Rime, Helldivers and Resogun amongst others.
RED & BLUE
Yes Magma Red and Wave Blue Dualshock 4 Controllers will be coming to our shores hopefully in time for launch and will retail around £50. Will we see matching console colours I wonder?
Although the coverage of the PS4 interface didn’t reveal too much we were able to discern a couple of key features. User seem to be able to select from visually friendly tiles to select games and online features but can also revert to the XMB menu commonly found on PSP and PS3, a way to keep everyone happy I’m sure.
PS users will finally, YES FINALLY, be getting private chat features. No longer will Xbox owners have that one over Sony. Not revolutionary, but necessary.
Various games will have notifications where you can quickly discover, without having to actually load up the game, what challenges your friends have set you or if they’ve beaten your high score etc. Definitely a nice feature for the over competitive.
Finally, we saw the live streaming of games in action. If you’re not up to date with what the PS4 has been boasting, it’s the capability of being able to drop into any friend’s game. From the menu you can watch whatever it is your friends are playing, chat with them and, should they wish, jump into there game with them – instantly. The way this appears to work is seamlessly and will be such an important factor to PS4’s connectivity.
Augmented reality game Play Room will come pre-installed on all PS4’s. Working in conjunction with the Playstation Camera. Play Room is a quirky little game that sees users on screen interacting with cute little robot creatures. But beware, if you annoy one of these little guys they’ll turn around an set your hair on fire. Fans of EyePet and Wonderbook will love this inclusive game. The only puzzling part about this is Sony’s decision to give you a game for free that requires the camera – which DOESN’T come with the PS4?
GRAN TURISMO 6
The latest in this market leading racing franchise will first make its debut on PS3 on the 6th of December and will hopefully be making it’s way to PS4 too. Apparently there is a film in production. HUH?
Yes Minecraft is coming to PS4 and PS3 click here for the latest.
Both the PS3 and PS VITA will be receiving a price cut of €199 (approximately £170). PS Vita sales have been described as “Sluggish” but Sony hope to see those fortunes turn around in the build up to Christmas. This is largely due to the remote-play function that the PS Vita has in relation to the PS4. Sony have claimed that nearly every PS4 title will be playable on the Vita. We saw Mark Cerny showing off this feature during Sony’s E3 conference and displays the “real” power of the PS Vita.
Couple all of that with the host of new games coming to the Vita such as Borderlands, Fez, Football Manager, Lego Marvel and Batman Arkham Origins: Blackgate and this little handheld console is looking more and more attractive by the day.
But it didn’t stop there. The firm confirmed that there will be over 900 games available, both physical copy and downloadable, for the PS Vita by the end of the year, which will be bolstered by three new Mega Packs heading to Europe all containing 6-10 games each.
Sony has seen a huge shift in attitude towards indie developers and has attempted to grab as many as possible for the PS4 and PS Vita. Sony were happy to proclaim that Hotline Miami 2 and Rogue Legacy would be coming exclusively to PS4 and PS Vita next year. Added to the list of exclusive indie games were Volume (from the creative minds of Thomas Was Alone) & N++. The latter will be out this winter and features a ton of level editing tools.
Finally The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth will be free to Playstation Plus subscribers on both PS Vita and PS4.
PLAYSTATION PLUS 14 DAY TRIAL
Yes every PS4 sold will include a 14 day trial to Playstation Plus. This service provides customers with a host of free games and those who use the trial will have access to DriveClub PS Plus version and Resogun (However these games will not work once the subscription runs out). Playstation Plus will be required to play multiplayer games online just like Microsoft’s Xbox Live Gold Membership.
On a side note, Assassin’s Creed 3 is expected to hit Playstation Plus’ Instant Game Collection sometime in the near future.
Virgin Media were declared Playstation 4’s official UK ISP partner. Details of the partnership are under wraps at the moment but Virgin will strive to help PS4 users access the next-generation console’s online services.
Finally Sony ran through the list of TV services that will be available on PS4. 19 channels are confirmed including Twitch (exclusive partner), BBC News, 5 on Demand and IGN. Sony’s Music Unlimited will also allow players to stream their playlists whilst playing games.
