US retail giant GameStop has released some telling figures this week. Developers, publishers, retailers and consumers are always on the lookout for any indication of which of the next-gen consoles is going to’ win the war’, despite the fact that the 8-year-old current gen war is still without a clearly defined “winner”.
The figures in question relate to their PowerUp(Tm) Rewards scheme and their ‘be the first to know’ registrations. Microsoft’s Xbox One has generated an impressive 700 000 sign ups. However, over the same period, the Sony Playstation 4 has racked up a staggering 1.5 million! More than double the interest of the Microsoft machine!
Now, these figures are not the same as pre-orders (though it was announced at gamescom that Sony have racked up over a million of those too)- and may not turn into sales, but they do suggest that Sony is still leading the charge since their impressive E3 showing earlier in the year.
The Xbox One certainly seems to be making some ground back – at least in terms of public opinion, but they still seemingly have a mountain to climb.
What these numbers are actually indicative of is not entirely clear, it could just be that more of the people enrolled on the PowerUp scheme were Sony fans already. The fear, at least from Microsoft’s perspective, will be that these numbers show a shift on allegiances from some Xbox fans – drifting over to Sony and the Playstation brand.
There are still weeks before the consoles launch in November (PS4 launching 15th and 29th in the US and EU respectively, Xbox One still to confirm when in November) and a lot could change in that time. Sony seem to be happily sticking to their original plans, while Microsoft are performing u-turns, sending mixed messages and doing their best to ignore Sony’s jibes – all in an effort to bridge the gap!
Launch details, bundles and deals could make a big difference come launch day- but both companies need to secure the pre-orders for them to be successful.
There’s a long way to go in this ‘war’ and though the numbers may tell one story at the moment, Sony are yet to win this battle, let alone the war.
