When the whispers that Microsoft were working on the (as of then unnamed) Xbox One, another Microsoft project fell upon the ears of fans, the Illumiroom, creating just as much of a frenzy as their future console.
At the time the Illumiroom was in the proof concept stage and there, it appears, it will remain. The Illumiroom was to give a new visual gaming experience by effectively expanding the field of view around the players TV, therefore immersing them even further into the wonderful worlds created. Watch the video below and you’ll see exactly what I mean.
Microsoft’s Albert Penello tried to point out some of the technical aspects and perhaps drawbacks to such technology
It’s very, very cool tech but it’s, like, for a consumer, it requires projectors and things.
Thank you Albert Penello.
That said Penello did state that he didn’t “expect” to see the Illuminroom make it’s way to the Xbox One. Originally when the Illumiroom was announced many thought this would be the future of gaming and Microsoft’s secret weapon in the console war. Many hoped to see it bundled with the Xbox One itself. Despite the innovation and ambition it all comes down to cost. Penello believes the product itself would cost thousands of dollars making this unaffordable for the average consumer. As a result we may never see the illumiroom hit the current gen consoles.
So what do you think to this extraordinary piece of kit? Should they release it? Perhaps they could justify their manufacturing expense by releasing it in small numbers with a high price tag for the avid collector or popstar with a huge bank account?
