In light of the recent update to the official Xbox One Wireless Controller product page, it has been revealed that Xbox One is supporting up to 8 controllers, Shuhei Yoshida (AKA @yosp), who is the president of Worldwide Studios at Sony, has been pestered on Twitter regarding the number of controllers that the PlayStation 4 will support.
And surprisingly, he’s responded – you can see the whole conversation here on Twitter, where one of Sony’s main men state that the PS4 will only support 4 controllers. Here’s a screenshot of the conversation:
This isn’t a feature that we were expecting, as the PS3 console had support for 7 controllers. But… Surely this all doesn’t matter, as 8 player split screen would be awful anyway?
If you cast your mind back to the Xbox One specification video that showed Major Nelson unboxing a retail Day One Xbox One, you’ll remember him talking about 4k resolutions support. With 4k resolution televisions possibly making a dip into the mainstream market soon, could we see 8 player split-screen on the Xbox One, without having to squint at some Spartan shaped blob on Halo 5? We think so, especially with the leaking and sudden announcement of HDMI 2.0, oriented toward upping 4K televisions to a 60fps display.
Or could this be paving the way for a new un-announced exclusive for Xbox One, that makes light of having multiple controller ports – in a similar style to the Rock Band franchise?
What we can say, is that it seems PS4 has shuffled backwards a bit here – if it’s there, a developer can utilise it. Although an announcement like this is a sure-fire way to sell more accessories!
