Certain details surrounding Batman Arkham Origins have been scarce, especially when it comes to the specific details of whom the 8 assassins, sent to hunt Batman, actually are. On the other hand, if not a little backwards, when it comes to future plans that are in store for the Caped Crusader, we do have information! The first bit of DLC, entitled the ‘Initiation‘, has been announced. Whilst no release date has been set, what we do know is that you will not play as Batman. Well, not exactly. This time players take control of Bruce Wayne as he travels to Asia to learn the ways of the ninja.
This is the first time the action will take place outside of Gotham and the events are a prequel to the main game itself. Bruce Wayne will encounter and even fight his greatest mentor Kirigi, the ninja who taught Ra’s Al Ghul’s league of assassins. In an interview with Eurogamer, Arkham Origins producer Guillaume Voghel, went on to explain:
You play as Bruce Wayne learning to be a ninja….That’s a really cool one. Narratively there’s some added content that will give players a little more background story.
But it’s not League of Assassins, it’s ninja-related. It’s when he learned to be a ninja and learned those techniques. He goes to a monastery – custom content was created for the DLC. You’ll be in Asia in the monastery. The team did a great job on that, it looks really good.”
This new content is part of the Arkham Origins season pass, which was recently announced by Warner Bros on their US Batman Arkham Twitter account. So far various character skins details have been leaked such as Millennium Skin pack, the Infinite Earth Skins pack, the Brightest Day Batman Skin and the Gotham by Gaslight skin, which are all exclusive to the season pass. Whilst this may excite comic fans it will be the challenge maps and the Initiation DLC that will make people want to part with their hard earned money. A few months back Warner Bros also advertised that online multiplayer battles would be coming to the Batman series for the first time, so far their is no word on whether extra multiplayer content will be included with the season pass.
Guillaume Voghel also divulged more information on a new game mode called “I Am The Night,” which sounds like the toughest game mode of all time. This game mode goes one step further than ‘hard’ or ‘batman plus mode,’ I Am The Night challenges players to complete the game with only one life. Achievement/trophy hunters may cry in dismay. Initially it was stated that this incredibly difficult game mode wouldn’t feature game saves, suggesting players would have to play 12 hours (approximate campaign time) non stop without dying. Creative Director Eric Holmes amended this statement via Twitter declaring that while the ‘no death penalty’ remained, players would be able to save. Phew! No sleepless nights ahead for me.
At the Eurogamer Expo, fans were treated to a new gameplay footage that really outlined the new fighting mechanics and the new detective mode. The latter is something I am particularly interested in. Besides the Riddler trophies, very little challenged the dark night and made me question why the title “world greatest detective” was attributed to him. This time the Batman series is attempting to tie up any loose ends in gameplay by offering bigger and more dynamic gameplay, as well as a whole host of new and never before seen challenges.
So if you are still unsure whether the move to next gen is for you at this time Batman Arkham Origins promises to be a compelling reason to hold onto your current system.
Batman Arkham Origins hits stores on the 25th of October on PS3, Xbox 360, PC, Wii U, Ps Vita and 3DS.
