United Front Games, developer of 2012’s story driven, open world masterpiece Sleeping Dogs has answered questions regarding an interesting trademark they recently registered. The registered trademark “Triad Wars” is indeed to be a follow up to Sleeping Dogs.
Though not as commercially successful as the developer had hoped, Sleeping Dogs was nevertheless an understated masterclass in story telling and fluid motion in an open world setting. The game was well received by critics (still holding on to an impressive 83 on Metacritic) and was considered by most to be a ‘sleeper hit’ of the 2012 Summer (it sold over 2 million copies, which the developer considered a ‘failure’).
Sleeping Dogs was an open world game set in the city of Hong Kong. It cast the player as undercover American policeman Wei Shen, as he returned to his country of origin in attempt to infiltrate the triad network through a childhood friend. Though the game drew some criticism for being derivative – and some reviewers questioned its graphics (harsh criticism, the game looked awesome – just the occasional simple texture), the driving mechanics, hand-to-hand combat and parkour style movement around a beautifully realised HongKong were almost unanimously held in high regard.
Despite the game being favorably compared to Grand Theft Auto IV (a number of critics actually preferring United Front Games’ approach to open world mechanics), the game was never elevated to GTA levels or sales. In light of recent events (the ridiculously positive reception, both critically and commercially, of Grand Theft Auto V), it’s understandable that United Front are keeping things tightly under wraps. Given that people will undoubtedly draw the comparison to GTA V, why should they announce anything when GTA V is at fever pitch and they have little to show?
However, come 2014 when the furore has died down a little, look for United Front and Square Enix to make a much bigger announcement and hopefully deliver something quite special!
