Over the last few days there has been much speculation as to whether Sony’s exclusive new I.P, DriveClub, will be released in time for launch. Sony confirmed today that DriveClub has in fact been delayed until early 2014, although no official release date has been set. This also means DriveClub Plus, available for free to Playstation Plus subscribers, will also be delayed. Contrast, a quirky downloadable puzzle platformer, who’s gameplay is comparable with Limbo or Paper Mario is to be offered as a free replacement to Playstation Plus Subscribers.
Both of these versions of DriveClub were meant to be one of Sony’s leading launch titles, but in a week of delays, which saw Watchdogs also put back until 2014, this begs the question – what titles will Sony be offering at launch? Back in September Sony announced several official PS4 bundles that would be available in the UK. Many of these included DriveClub or Watchdogs, although Twinstickgaming reported earlier this week that the ‘likely alternative’ for Watchdogs would be Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag. However, no alternative has been suggested for DriveClub. Sony themselves only have two in house exclusives to offer and Killzone: Shadow Fall is already included in many of their bundles. This leaves Knack, Michael Cerny’s cutesy platformer largely aimed a kids. Whilst this may be a welcome title for some, it certainly will not draw the universal appeal that DriveClub was potentially offering. Could we see Sony broker a last minute deal with a third party company?
Will this also effect Sony’s latest PS4 Live Action TV Trailer, which appears to feature DriveClub?
So why the delay? Simply put the game isn’t ready yet. Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida stated;
SCE Worldwide Studios and the team at Evolution Studios have made the difficult decision to delay the release of Driveclub and Driveclub PlayStation Plus Edition until early 2014…. Driveclub will be a truly innovative, socially connected racing game, but the team requires more time in order to deliver on their vision and I’m fully confident the game will surpass your expectations.
We understand that the delay is disappointing news, but can assure you that the reason we have made this decision is to ensure that when Driveclub launches, it will realize the next gen racing vision.”
And PlayStation 4 gamers will have no shortage of titles to play this year. At launch alone, we have Killzone: Shadow Fall, Knack, Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag, FIFA 14, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4, to name but a few, as well as the incredible list of Indie games coming to PS4.”
The extra time we’re giving the team means the visuals and overall experience are only going to get better. We can assure you that it will be worth the wait.”
Sadly, from a consumer perspective, Sony’s PS4 launch is looking slightly more jaded. The initial flurry of blows that Sony sent Microsoft’s way throughout the build up to the console war, made Sony appear to be on top. Momentum was firmly with the Playstation 4 and not so much the Xbox One. However, with Microsoft doing everything to turn things around and appease their fans, Sony’s recent woes could see the Xbox One being the more attractive Christmas console.
