Microsoft have really outdone themselves with their latest video offering to the Xbox Youtube page, with some brand new Xbox One demo footage. The 12-minute live demonstration video features Microsoft’s Marc Whitten and Yusef Mehdi exploring the Xbox One user interface and some of its main features.
The demonstration immediately shows off the speed of the machine’s Windows ‘metro-style’ UI, which is still quite similar to the Xbox 360’s interface. There’s also voice and controller navigation, along with possibilities for profile customisation. A user can alter their profile to change dashboard colours and icons, along with customisable ‘pins’ – icons that the user can choose to display in a prominent place on their dashboard. Multiple users can switch between the active profile and customisations by using the voice command ‘show my stuff’.
Switching between a game and television seems easy enough, with just simple voice command or gesture. Plus, switching to live TV on the Xbox One will continue to show notifications, meaning that if a friend is taking their time to get online, you can just switch to TV with a voice command, with the ‘user signed in’ prompt appearing at the bottom of the screen. This is also demonstrated with game invites and Skype conversations.
Finally, the video capture feature is demonstrated on Forza Motorsport 5. At launch the machine can handle 5 minutes of 720p recording at 30fps and can be customised with skins, video introductions, picture-in-picture recording and commentary. Just before a video is uploaded, a warning displayed on the Xbox One’s ‘Upload Studio’: ‘All clips are reviewed for violations of the Xbox Live Code of Conduct. There may be some delay before your clip is visible to anyone else.’.
Overall, we’re pretty impressed with the demonstration and the features being shown. With less than 2 weeks to go until the worldwide release of the Xbox One, we will soon find out if these features really are what they’ve been hyped to be!
