After weeks of speculation about what (or who) The Last of Us single player DLC would focus on, Naught Dog have FINALLY answered the call with this one minute teaser trailer (courtesy of IGN):
(The following article may contain mild spoilers for The Last of Us game and American Dreams comic)
The trailer shows a brief clip of fan favourite, Ellie along with her best friend Riley as they approach a carousel ride. The pair appear excited to see the ride still has power. Now, those of us who have either played through the whole The Last of Us adventure (and / or read the companion prequel comic book story American Dreams) will have some idea of Ellie and Riley’s story. What we’ll hopefully get to explore, through the DLC, is how those events transpire and the exact nature of the relationship between Ellie and Riley.
Though Ellie’s innocence, throughout the extreme trauma that is the main story of The Last of Us, captured the hearts and minds of all who played through the campaign – we actually don’t know THAT much about her by the game’s end. We certainly learned more than we cared to know about Joel, but a lot of what we learn of Ellie is through assumed innocence and pre-conceived notions.
We all felt protective of Ellie, which is why, by the end of the story, players felt so betrayed by how the story brought about its conclusion. However, I wouldn’t put it past Naughty Dog to challenge those ideas.
Most seem to have interpreted the DLC title of ‘Left Behind’ as a reference to Ellie’s situation, finding herself left alone in the world by her family and friends. What if ‘left behind’ doesn’t actually refer to Ellie? Perhaps there will be more to this story than we think? Could Riley be the one that gets left behind? Will the story we play, be the story that Ellie recounts to Joel at the end of their journey together?
We know that Riley is an older girl who has already been able to lead Ellie astray and has a keen sense of adventure and desire to join The Fireflies. The trailer would suggest that the DLC story will cover at least part of the American Dreams story. What happens after Ellie and Riley return to military school? Well, that remains to be seen.
Or … could the most amazingly divisive, shock-twist ending in videogame history be about to get another layer?
The Last of Us ‘Left Behind’ DLC will be available to download on PSN early 2014.
