Microsoft have purchased the famous Xbox exclusive franchise Gears of War from its creator, Epic Games. The announcement, from Xbox Wire, states that Microsoft now own all rights to current and future Gears of War titles. Future game development has been given to Black Tusk Studios, aka the former Microsoft Vancouver. The former Director of Production at Epic Games on the Gears of War series, Rod Fergusson, will also be joining Black Tusk as a result of the move, providing a leadership role to development of the franchise. On the subject of what the franchise’s future holds, Hanno Lemke, the General Manager of Black Tusk, has said the following:
“We hope to be able to share more news about “Gears of War” later this year.”
So not much to go on then… fingers crossed for an announcement of epic proportions! We’re pretty sure that we can safely say that this franchise will remain exclusive to Microsoft. We wonder if future developments will follow the same set of characters, or will there be new heroes… maybe even a new planet for the locust to infest?
Unfortunately, Clifford Bleszinski has already made a statement (on his tumblr account) confirming that he will not be returning to his former franchise in any capacity. Aw man!
