Metal Gear 5: What are ‘Ground Zeroes’ and ‘The Phantom Pain’?

We may be only weeks away from the release of Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes but the more I speak to people, it seems people are just as confused as ever as to what is Metal Gear Solid 5? Is it Ground Zeroes or is it The Phantom Pain? Is it two games? Or is it one game split in to two?

I figured it would be a nice idea to get things cleared up so that upon its release, you can be as excited as you should be, to play Hideo Kojima’s latest entry in the Metal Gear series.

Ground Zeroes puts you back in the boots of Big Boss and is a follow up to the PSP game – Metal Gear Solid: Peacewalker – and will serve as a prologue story to the complete version of the game, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. This formula is very similar to that of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty: a trial version, which allowed you to play through most of the first chapter of the game, that was released long before the finished version. When the full retail version did hit the shelves, it had the option to play right from the very start (the Tanker level from the trial version), or to skip that and let you start from roughly where the trial version ended.

In a previous news story here at Twinstick Gaming, we mentioned that the reported length of Ground Zeroes was only two hours. Although Hideo Kojima has stated that this is correct to complete the main story of Ground Zeroes, if you intend to complete everything possible such as side missions and full exploration of the game, the total playthrough time can be greatly extended.

The Phantom Pain will be the continuation of Ground Zeroes and the full version of Metal Gear Solid 5. Your save for Ground Zeroes can be used for when The Phantom Pain is released so that you can pick up from where you left off at the end of Ground Zeroes. Meaning there is a great incentive to play through Ground Zeroes until you’ve found and mastered everything. It’s unclear at this time whether the ‘Ground Zeroes’ chapter will also make up part of The Phantom Pain (like MGS2), or if it will be available as a stand alone only.

Hideo Kojima revealed that the reason Metal Gear Solid 5 has come to be released as two games, was that production of The Phantom Pain was still ongoing due to the sheer size of the game and the game would never have seen a next-gen console launch window, which was requested from the studio.

With this being the case, Ground Zeroes was created so that gamers could experience an “appetizer” of things to come from the new FOX engine while we anticipate the launch of the rest of Metal Gear Solid 5 – The Phantom Pain.

So what do you guys think? Do you think releasing Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes as a prologue to keep you going is a good idea, or would you rather wait until The Phantom Pain is released and play the game in its fullest form?

Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes will be released 21st  March and is available for PS4, Xbox One, PS3 and Xbox 360.
