Justin Richmond has resigned Naughty Dog to join League of Legends developer Riot Games. Richmond spoke to IGN on why he has left the company during the development of Uncharted 4;
I have made the decision to leave Naughty Dog…..I love the company and the people and know that they will continue to create awesome games going forward. On a happier note, after careful consideration and exploration I have joined Riot Games. There is some really innovative stuff going on here that I can’t wait to be a part of.”
Richmond had been with Naughty Dog since 2008 and initially worked on Uncharted 2’s multiplayer before progressing to games director on Uncharted 3. Earlier in the year Amy Hennig also departed from Naughty Dog and it was suggested that she was ‘forced out’ of the company, something Naughty Dog have refuted.
The Uncharted series is critically acclaimed and has a host of dedicated fans who no doubt will be concerned about the departure of two of it’s chief contributors. Whether this truly does have an impact on the much loved series is yet to be seen. However, even with both Richmond and Hennig, arguably two of Uncharted 4’s major powerhouses, leaving the project, Naughty Dog remain confident that this will not impact the development timeline of Uncharted 4. I do however, imagine this will raise a few eyebrows as to whether Uncharted 4 now has the capacity to live up to it’s very high expectations.
