Sony Online Entertainment have unveiled that upcoming post apocalyptic zombie survival game, H1Z1, will be heading to the PS4 as well as Steam. The game is so named because a virus wipes out a majority of humanity and the remnants have to fight for survival.
This MMO is going to be free-to-play so we can expect DLC and potentially microtransactions that go a long way to maintaining your characters lifespan, because whilst survival is the key SOE President John Smedley assures players that death is certain.
It’s a massively multiplayer game in which players fight for survival in a world where death is the only sure thing……The H1Z1 virus devastated mankind and left nothing but death and destruction in its wake and a world nearly empty of human life where the remnants of humanity are in a fight against extinction against those infected with the virus.“
Comparisons are already being drawn with other survival horror games such as the ever growingly popular DayZ. Both of these games are MMO’s that focus on survival, not just from the hordes of zombies, but players must find food, water and shelter to stand any chance of making it through to the next day. Another thing both games have in common is the ability to trade items with other players, which if DayZ is anything to go by, you can expect H1Z1 to have situations were players either play nice and trade or perhaps take the supplies by force.
However, Smedley was keen to point out the major differences between H1Z1 and other zombie survival games by highlighting, not only the games quality, but that H1Z1 could sustain 1000’s of players across multiple servers. Smedley told Reddit users;
The main thing that differentiates H1Z1 from the other great games in the genre is the emphasis we are putting on player ownership and building,
We want you to be able to form roving gangs that are headquartered out of an abandoned warehouse that you’ve taken over… or a house you’ve built from scratch after having cut trees down and secured the resources to make it.’
We want our players to make Woodbury from The Walking Dead if they want to. Or take over a prison. Or fix an old car so you and your friends can run zombies and players over mercilessly, and revel in the sheer delight of hearing a zombie scream as you light it on fire, or craft a gun to take down your friends and enemies alike.
If you prefer a quiet life as a farmer raising crops… we’re going to make sure your zombie apocalypse fantasy is complete“
The possibilities sound endless and this could very well prove to be the case. The most interesting aspect of H1Z1, and I personally think could be a masterstroke, is that players have the option to create and submit in game content. This could range from missions, to specially created items. Potentially, the game could see no end with players continually creating content. Fans of games such as Neverwinter and Skyrim (both for PC) will often talk of their pleasure at discovering a well made fan created mod and I feel H1Z1 can only benefit from this.
So far details on this title are still sketchy, but sometime next week their will be a livestream playtest session that should give us further insights on what is to come but according to Metro H1Z1 is due out on Steam in six weeks.
