What drew me in to the original Dragon Age Origins was the amazing, diverse and often humorous characters. Even when I thought that this band of merry Darkspawn killers couldn’t get any better, they introduced Shale – a flippant yet blood thirsty stone golem. The result just made you want to play the game all over again, as Shale’s interaction with other characters was amazing.
However, Bioware who are renowned for their characterisation, have opted out of any character DLC for their upcoming game Dragon Age: Inquistion. Mike Laidlaw has already said that if there were to be any character DLC it would already have to be on the disc. Here is what Laidlaw told OXM;
Because of how deeply enmeshed in the system companion characters are, we can’t just add them on the fly – part of them has to be shipped on the disc…….. Which has led to criticism that we’re forcing people to pay for content they already own. It’s not the case, but we’ve decided this time to not go that route. There will be no DLC party members.”
The decision to have DLC effectively hidden on the disc has sparked arguments from consumers who feel they are being forced to by content they already own. Games like Bioshock and Disney Infinity came under attack for such tactics. However, initially many were skeptical about DLC but even though it still has it’s critics, DLC has become common place. Whether people will learn to become accepting of paying for content already on the disc is another matter. This system could be likened to micro-transaction based games, were the game is available but if you want to experience the full gaming experience you’ll have to pay for it. Only this time you HAVE paid for the game.
Currently there are 9 characters that will be in your party but only 6 are confirmed.
