Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn has surpassed move than 2 million registered players. Whilst this is a success in itself, the figures don’t state how many of these registered gamers are currently active and paying a subscription.
One thing developer Square Enix can be proud of is, that of these 2 million players, not one is being counted from the original FF-XIV that launched some time ago and that these figures reflect gamers who have registered since FF-XIV’s relaunch earlier this year.
Whilst subscription funded games have come under scrutiny, largely due to the sustainable nature of paying monthly for a game, this bodes well for the MMO. Games such as Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, despite it’s rumoured £200 million budget soon became free to play and there are no shortage of subscription haters out there who expect Elder Scrolls Online to follow suit.
But for now Final Fantasy is in a position were it can stave off it’s critics, that is until the number of subscribers (or possibly lack of) for next month becomes public knowledge. Twinstickgaming will watch this space and keep you up to date with any further developments.
