Ok, so Watch Dogs may still be a month away with no guarantee of success, but its fair to say, despite the rocky road it has been, its shaping up to be something quite special.
So special, in fact, that creative director, Jonathan Morin, has already freely discussed the sequel potential. In an interview with Eurogamer, Morin was pressed on the matter of a potential sequel, he had this to say:
Right now there is no such thing as a Watch Dogs 2,[…] It’s certainly not going to be the same amount of time if we ever embark on such a journey. A big part of it was defining whatever Watch Dogs is. Once you have that starting point, then what becomes interesting is what players want more of – what comes next?
Especially with the delay we have just been really concentrating on getting it [Watchdogs] launched. After that we’ll see where it goes – I think Ubisoft is showing more and more that they’re willing to take the time for it to be right.
“I think we’re in a pretty good shape. I certainly like the idea of going deeper in the thematics – the hyperconnectivity and hacking in an entire city, controlling a city, monitoring everyone. There’s stuff we discovered by making Watch Dogs that are interesting to pursue. But it’s up to players. [And] for me right now – it’s vacation.”
All of this sounds pretty good. This is a game Morin is confident in and he sounds eager to develop a sequel. Interestingly, he highlights the fact that Ubisoft are showing they are happy to take the time to get things right. What we also know from Ubisoft, through the Assassin’s Creed franchise, is that once they have a working formula, they’re not afraid to produce sequels.
The good news is, whether we’re seeing delays of six months each time a Watch Dogs game is created, or we see a yearly ‘update’ model ala Creed, the quality of the work is undeniable. Perhaps with two immersive, open world franchises in their arsenal, Ubi will have the freedom to take extra time to develop their games even further and really start to push the boundaries!
All we know for certain right now is Assassin’s Creed IV was stunning and we can’t wait for Watch Dogs!
Despite Morin’s claims, there is a strong possibility that a sequel to Watch Dogs is already in development – just not necessarily titled ‘Watch Dogs 2’.
Watch Dogs will be mysteriously finding its way onto your PC, PS3, PS4, 360 or Xbox One from May 27th, 2014.
