Back in February, Warner Bros unleashed a trailer for an upcoming Lord of the Rings game entitled Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor. The game was a surprise to many and came from nowhere, but Monolith Productions had plenty to showcase. So far we’ve had insights into the main character Talion, the story-line, and the rather intriguing nemesis system, where your interactions, decisions and reputation can affect your enemies.
This latest trailer delves deeper into the gameplay mechanics and explains how even your weapons can gain infamy across Sauron’s armies, as well as how to collect runes from defeated enemy chieftains.
Whilst many comparisons were initially drawn with Assassin’s Creed, Shadows of Mordor seems to have more in common with another Warner Bros title, Batman Arkham Asylum. The combat appears fluent and quick, for example, unlike the clunkier style of Assassin’s Creed, although the stealth elements certainly seem to be cut from a similar cloth to the Creed series.
Having the option to upgrade your weapons via runes adds another layer to the game as players will intentionally seek out runes in order to become the most formidable foe in all of Middle-Earth. The placement of epic runes on Chieftains will effectively encourage all players to seek out every aspect of the game, rather than just rushing their way through to the final stages.
All in all, Shadow of Mordor’s adult and brutal take on Middle Earth is definitely beginning to take shape and we can expect to see more at E3 this summer.
Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor is coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC on the 7th of October.
