Already rumoured to have been making an appearance at this year’s E3 Expo, NetherRealm Studios have jumped the gun and officially announced Mortal Combat X.
Whilst it’s quite hard to actually find any solid information about the new game, I think it’s safe to say the series will continue with its famous bone-crunching-fighter format, and the announcement trailer shows Mortal Kombat’s two most iconic characters, Sub-Zero and Scorpion, locked in an epic, atmospheric fight.
The fighting (in the trailer at least) shows off a number of things, including environmental weapons and the return of personal weapons. While the trailer may or may not be made from actual in-game footage, the game does seem to have toned down the pace of the fighting. This reduction in speed definitely makes the hits seem more devastating, and with the famed X-Ray attacks, it also makes it feel much more brutal.
Ed Boon, Mortal Kombat’s co-creator, said : “Mortal Kombat has always been about over-the-top, visceral fighting and with Mortal Kombat X we wanted to utilize the power of new-gen consoles to give players our most intense game yet,” adding, “The team has worked hard to make sure Mortal Kombat X delivers everything fans expect along with new characters, new game modes and an all-new graphics engine.”
Mortal Kombat X is set for launch in 2015, on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4 and PC.
