At this years E3, Naughty Dog and Sony could have been stood on stage in complete silence for 24 hours, with no lights, no fireworks and not even a faint pang of excitement on their faces, they wouldn’t have even needed to have played the trailer. They simply could have written the words Uncharted 4 onto a blank piece of paper and I’ve have ran down my street screaming with jubilation at the sheer thought of another Uncharted game.
Yes I am slightly biased.
Despite the worries of several figureheads, most notably Amy Hennig, leaving the Uncharted 4 project behind, my doubts and fears have subsided. The new trailer looks stunning. The attention to detail and the visual presence are almost palpable. Naughty Dog were also quick to point out (much like previous Uncharted games) that the trailer was “completely in engine.”
Uncharted 4 is certainly delving into darker territories. Whilst Nathan Drake has often been a frivolous character , at his core he is there is a slight darker edge to him. In the trailer fans can see a much older, perhaps hardened Drake and judging by the original game trailer revealed at last years PS4 launch party, we can expect Drake to undergo some difficult challenges ahead. The video description for Uncharted 4 reads;
“Several years after his last adventure, retired fortune hunter, Nathan Drake, is forced back into the world of thieves…..With the stakes much more personal, Drake embarks on a globe-trotting journey in pursuit of a historical conspiracy behind a fabled pirate treasure. His greatest adventure will test his physical limits, his resolve, and ultimately what he’s willing to sacrifice to save the ones he loves.”
Last of Us creator Neil Druckman is now at the helm of Uncharted 4 and this presentation, albeit slight, shows that the series is in good hands. The biggest concern for insanely dedicated fans such as myself, are the trailer’s resounding last words;
Nathan Drake: “So can I count on you, one last time?”
Sully: “Ok kid. Let’s go do it. One last time.”
Will this be Drake’s last ever adventure or is this the last time we will see Sully covering Drake’s back? The love I have for these characters means I hope neither is true but I know whatever Naughty Dog produce will leave it’s mark upon me.
Uncharted 4 is due sometime in 2015 exclusively on PS4. Stay tuned with Twinstickgaming for the latest.
