Playstation Plus: Free games for July 2014

Each month the Playstation Plus Instant Game collection gets updated, bringing us fresh games completely free (providing you’re a Playstation Plus subscriber). Under the new system, PS+ will bring 2 new games to the collection for each console in the Playstation camily (PS4, PS3, PS Vita).

At TwinStick Gaming, we try to bring you the news as early as possible – a task which has gotten harder in the last few months thanks to Sony finally finding the source of the early leaks and plugging it well and truly!

Needless to say, the following is subject to change and may vary from region to region.

Playstation 4 – Towerfall Ascension (confirmed)TowerfallAscensionBannerLogo

The indie hit from Matt Thorson, Towerfall Ascension is a simple concept that keeps players as giggly and excited as they are frustrated and vengeful. It’s a fourplayer, ‘archery arena’ game that has retro inspired design, but is delightfully modern in its execution.

Comparisons to Super Smash Bros. are understandable and more than fair, but with a touch of the quirkiness we are seeing more and more in the modern indie games (take a look at Nidhogg, you’ll see what we mean). Addictive madness is the order of the day. Fast frantic battles between friends that are easy to access, but hard to master (pro tip: if you time it right, you can catch your opponents arrows). Towerfall Ascension is a great game in general and a well worthy addition to the instant games collection.

We seem to keep saying this at TwinStick Gaming, but really don’t knock Towerfall until you try it! We know some readers are desperate for the triple-A freebies, don’t ignore the triple-A indies while you wait!

Playstation 4 – Strider (confirmed)

Strider 1

Also added to the collection is the next-gen reboot of MegaDrive classic, Strider. Double helix has done a fine job of reinventing Strider for a modern audience, while managing to stay fairly faithful to the frantic, fast paced action that made the original so great.

The 2D action platformer follows the exploits of Strider (an elite soldier) Hiryu, who receives orders to assassinate Grandmaster Meio, supreme dictator of Earth, who has plunged humanity into a dystopian dark age. Battling your way through gorgeous levels against the ever increasingly difficult hoardes of baddies is an awesome blast-from-the-past.

Challenging gameplay and awesome boss battles are the order of the day. Strider is definitely a game not to be missed. Check out our full review here.

Playstation 3 – Dead Space 3 (confirmed)

On PS3 this month it’s time to return to the depths of space in Dead Space 3. Fortunately this time you are not alone as Isaac Clarke and merciless soldier John Carver go on a journey across space to discover the source of the Necromorph outbreak. Facing never-more-deadly evolved enemies, the unlikely pair must work together to save mankind from extinction.
