You know how I’ve already written two pieces about Google buying twitch, and one piece about how Google buying Twitch had already started to mess things up, yeah!? Well, feel free to go right ahead and disregard those, because it emerged yesterday that Amazon have actually agreed to purchase the game streaming site.
The deal, reported to be in the region of one billion dollars (I got that right, at least), is likely to be concluded in the very near future, and has come as a surprise to almost everyone except, presumably, Amazon and Twitch themselves.
Twitch CEO Emmet Shear said “Amazon and Twitch optimize for our customers first and are both believers in the future of gaming”, adding that “being part of Amazon will let us do even more for our community. We will be able to create tools and services faster than we could have independently. This change will mean great things for our community, and will let us bring Twitch to even more people around the world”.
He also stressed that Twitch were “keeping most everything the same: our office, our employees, our brand, and most importantly our independence. But with Amazon’s support we’ll have the resources to bring you an even better Twitch”.
So, there you have it: Twitch will be owned by Amazon.
