In a recent interview with IGN, Ted Price of Insomniac Games let slip that Sunset Overdrive is locked to 30fps and will be another next gen title to miss the 1080p resolution mark. During the interview Price explained the lower than expected resolution and why the game runs at 30 frames per second.
We’re running at 900p and 30 fps native. This is a game with a lot on the screen and we made the choice to be at 900 because we wanted to push the level of detail, action, the size of the city and the views you can experience as you move around. What’s great about Sunset Overdrive is if you can see it, you can go there.
Price also wants to turn Sunset Overdrive into a franchise, using the colourful approach to the apocalypse as a starting point for more games in the future;
Absolutely we want this to be a new franchise. This is a game that we and Microsoft are excited about because it does present a very different view of the apocalypse, society and character identification. This is a game where we’re breaking a lot of rules with regards to how open world games have been presented in the past. It doesn’t take itself too seriously and constantly breaks the fourth wall. It presents colour as a feature, which we haven’t seen a lot recently. It’s a new and fresh experience and we hope players understand the language we’re speaking and want us to take it further.
So has this new information put anybody off? It’s doubtful but there has been some rumours that the frame rate is dropping below that locked 30fps when there’s a lot happening onscreen. Now this was an early build of the game so hopefully these problems will be ironed out by its October 28th release. The team here at TwinStick are looking forward to this crazy and bright open-world adventure.
