Telltales Minecraft: Story Mode Details and Reception

Telltales Minecraft: Story Mode Details and ReceptionEver since its announcement, Telltale Games has received a lot of criticism from its fans about their new project with Mojang, Minecraft: Story Mode. Well now more information has emerged in the form of a new trailer, and opinions could not be more split down the middle, that is if the Youtube ‘Like’ and ‘Dislike’ options are anything to go by.

Either way, Telltales Minecraft game is happening and here’s all the details we have so far!

The game is an adventure game that has been set in the Minecraft world, and they have done a pretty good job in replicating the look and feel of one. Any person who has watched a Minecraft spoof song will see the uncanny resemblance it has, minus some of the games jittery animations. It’s clear they have worked closely with Mojang to really nail the general aesthetic, and will also incorporate some of Minecrafts crafting and exploration aspects. To what extent. however. I remain sceptical on.

As is the usual format with a Telltale game, this is an episodic adventure of five parts. Each episode an estimated 2 hours long, with choices that affect gameplay outcomes. Episodes will be available for download separately, or a season pass can be bought at a slightly lower price, with a full retail copy to follow once all episodes have been released digitally. While a price hasn’t been confirmed, players can expect the typical £20ish pound price tag for the full version of the game.

Telltale state the game will be loved by “young and old” players of Minecraft alike, but as with the Borderlands and Game of Thrones series, it’s a good idea to be a fan of the medium, with a certain amount of knowledge of the game and its mechanics.

Speaking of mechanics, though the game will look like a Minecraft and talk like a Minecraft, expect a more point and click adventure, with minimal need of independent movement, followed with a sprinkle of QTEs. This method of gameplay allows the game to be available on practically every platform. The list of platforms are as follows: Xbox 360, Xbox One, Playstation 3, Playstation 4, PC, Mac, compatible iOS devices, Android, and even Amazon Fire TV.

Story wise, this is the description provided by Telltale:

You are Jesse. He and his group of friends revere the legendary Order of the Stone; four adventurers that slayed an Ender Dragon. The Order are the very best at what they do: Warrior, Redstone Engineer, Griefer, and Architect. While at EnderCon, Jesse and his friends discover that something is wrong… something dreadful. Terror is unleashed, and they must set out on a journey to find The Order of the Stone if they are to save their world from oblivion.

The characters in the game feature a wide range of critically acclaimed and well know actors and voice actors, including Billy West (the voice of Fry from Futurama), and Ashley Johnson (the voice of Ellie from the Last of us) along with many others.

Minecraft: Story Mode is slated for a 2015 release.
